2020 Vision: Looking Back to Move Forward

2020 will soon be in the rearview mirror.

Good riddance, right?

But not so fast. There are plenty of lessons from 2020 that can serve you well in the year ahead.

This week, we’re sharing some 2020 highlights from Thought Leadership Weekly that may be useful as you plan to hit the ground running in 2021.

When it comes to getting your message out, a key consideration is finding new ways to talk with an increasingly divided America. It’s also about making sure that you are connecting with diverse audiences.

The Covid-19 crisis has reaffirmed the power of story as a means to engage both hearts and minds – and how it’s more important than ever to find ways to make sure those stories stand out from the crowd. The key to making that happen may well rest in taking the time to figure out your ‘why’.

Amid the historically challenging media landscape, it’s critical to make sure your pitches are succinct and ready for prime time. And the emergence of Zoom press conferences can be one way to connect easily with a broader pool of journalists.

And then, of course, there’s the pressing need to prepare for the next communications crisis – a practice that has increasingly become the routine rather than the rarity. Now more than ever, you need to be asking ‘what if’ and making sure you have some solid answers before trouble strikes.

One thing for sure, in 2021 it will be critical to find ways to do more with less, whether that means getting the most out of your press releases or finding ways to get more mileage out of your op-eds.

Another maxim to heed: Quality over quantity. For instance, finding fresh ways to engage with your social media audience and making sure that you focus on consistency when developing a content calendar. At times, also consider going against the conventional wisdom of ‘shorter is always better’ to create content that has greater depth and meaning.
